The course is designed to provide a good working knowledge of heavy motor‑vehicles in preparation for undertaking the "Learner" Class 2 Driver Licence Test.

Courses are normally run as part of a Community Education class associated with a local secondary school, however, because they are designed as “stand alone”, they can be run within the workplace. The standard course consists of six sessions of two hours each, howeve,r this can be modified to suit local requirements and budgets.

The subject matter is reasonably extensive including such key elements as log books and driving hours, maximum permitted weights and legal dimensions, axle and wheel configurations, intersections / controls / give way rules, relevant legal definitions, safe loading requirements and various securing devices available.

For existing HMV drivers wishing to extend their driver licences i.e. classes 3, 4, or 5 or perhaps other specialist areas. An overview outlining the requirements for the certificate of knowledge of law and practice and the carriage of hazardous/ dangerous goods is also provided.

Practical in‑class exercises are aimed at improving the individual's knowledge of the Road Code and correct completion of log books meeting the minimum legal standard.

A comprehensive workbook is provided for each student and there is on-going opportunity to ask questions to clarify any issues.

Costs: $66.67 pp plus GST if conducted through a Community Education Night Class Learning Centre. Individual quotes available for workplace courses as required.

Additional notes to the above

  • Course participants require a positive attitude, a current D/L with the appropriate class, and writing materials.
  • A corporate vehicle would be required for any practical on‑road assessment or remedial tuition options.
  • Theory courses require a suitable training room, tables etc, whiteboard. overhead projector and video/ DVD screening facilities. Hireage of a suitable venue and facilities, photo copying and out of town meals would be additional to the prices quoted above.
  • Any outside Hamilton travel and overnight accommodation/ meal costs would be additional to the above based at 0.75 cents per km plus $35.56 per hour travelling time.
  • Costs are based on the current costs of materials. Any increase in these costs imposed by other providers would be additional to the above quoted prices.
